Skyview stops Eagles at state

By Tim Clinton

Skyview's Storm made sure Federal Way's stay at state was a short one this year.

The Southwest Washington team finished strong to oust the Eagles, 55-47, in a loser-out Class 4A boys basketball tournament game at the Tacoma Dome Wednesday.

Skyview advances to a Thursday state quarterfinal.

Federal Way jumped out to a 7-0 lead to open the game and still held a 27-24 advantage at halftime.

Candon Bible gave the Eagles their last lead at 31-28 on a drive inside with 5:09 to play in the third quarter.

Gavin Perdue of the Storm followed with two straight 3-point baskets to suddenly put his team up, 34-31.

Kofi Peyton forged Federal Way's last tie at 34-34 with a 3-point shot from the left side with 56 seconds left in the third quarter.

Javen Fletch of Skyview broke it with a 3-pointer 19 seconds later.

Mason Thomas of the Eagles answered with a pair of free throws at 20.4 seconds to clip the lead to 37-36.

Demeree Collins of the Storm drove inside at the buzzer and tacked on four straight points to open the fourth quarter.

Skyview never led by less than four points after that.

Thomas led Federal Way with 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Peyton added 12 points and Bible hit 10.

Saxon Niles finished with four points and Sam Wah and Jacob Hurskin tallied two apiece.

Beamer battles back, then comes up short

By Tim Clinton

Todd Beamer's boys basketball team staged an amazing comeback late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter Wednesday, only to see Mountlake Terrace wrest away a 69-59 win in the end.

The Class 3A state tournament loss at the Tacoma Dome marked the end of the road for the Titans this year.

Todd Beamer trailed by a 45-30 score with 2:57 remaining in the third quarter before going on an 18 point run.

Caleb Berry buried a 3-point shot to start the string at 2:38, and sank a pair of free throws 35 seconds later.

Will Tellis added a 3-point shot at 1:07, then drove inside for two with 31.7 seconds left to make it 45-40.

He missed an ensuing free throw, but Dominic Simpson rebounded it and put it back, also drawing a foul.

Simpson rebounded his own miss, leading to a free throw make by Terrence Whiting at 14.4 seconds to make it 45-43.

Simpson opened the final quarter with a basket to tie it, drawing a foul and making the free throw for a 46-45 lead with 7:46 remaining.

The Titans went up 48-45 before the Hawks took the lead to stay on a six-point run.

Simpson fouled out during the run.

Tellis led the Titans with 19 points while Berry added 15, Whiting 14 and Simpson five.  Abdala Shaban, Ahmed Ismail and Josiah Davis hit two apiece.

State pairings announced

By Tim Clinton

Federal Way finds itself in a situation where it will play at least one boys basketball game in the Tacoma Dome next week, while Todd Beamer must win two loser-out games to get that far.

The good news for the Titans is their state Class 3A tournament road starts off with a game in their own gymnasium.

Todd Beamer is the No. 13 state seed and Ridgeline is the No. 20

Tuesday's winner visits No. 12 Mount Vernon at 8 p.m. Saturday for another loser-out game.  Saturday's winner plays at the Tacoma Dome in another loser-out game the following Wednesday.

While the Titans face a long road, the Eagles face a long trip.

Tahoma 67, Federal Way 66

One measley point was all that separated Federal Way from Tahoma of Maple Valley in a Class 4A District 3/4 semifinal Thursday.

The Eagles were hoping to beat the Bears after the teams split two games during the regular season and tied for first place in the North Puget Sound League.

Tahoma took the No. 1 seed to districts and the Eagles landed the No. 2 seed, but Thursday's game was predetermined to be played on the Federal Way floor no matter who was in it.

A win would have advanced the Eagles to Saturday's tournament championship, but instead they will play a 2:45 p.m. game at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma against Olympia for third and fourth place.

Both teams advance to next week's state regional playoffs.

Olympia is coming off a semifinal loss to Kentwood.

Auburn 67, Todd Beamer 47

To play or not to play.

That is the question for Todd Beamer and next opponent Kelso after both teams fell into the third place game of the Class 3A District 3/4 tournament with losses Thursday.

The 11:15 a.m. game is optional since both teams advance to state regionals.

Kelso may not want to make the trip to Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

A Washington State Interscholastic Activities seeding committee will decide regional pairings either way.
