So close and yet so far.
Decatur almost knocked off top seeded Olympia early in the Class 4A District 3/4 girls fastpitch softball tournament to grab a quick trip to state, but eventually wound up being left out of the state picture entirely.
The Gators opened the district tournament held at the Kent Service Club by beating Sumner, 3-0, Friday afternoon before taking a 4-3 evening loss to Olympia.
Decatur bounced back to blast Kentridge Saturday morning, 11-3, to get back on the verge of going to next week's state tournament in the Tri-Cities.
The Gators missed with a 7-1 loss to Battle Ground.
They got one last chance to qualify in a loser-out, winner-to-state game against Puyallup, but came up short by a 6-4 score.

The Raiders had a short two game and out stay at the Class 3A version of the District 3/4 festivities held at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.
TJ opened by being swept away by the Gig Harbor Tides, 16-1, Thursday morning.
That dropped the Raiders into an early afternoon loser- out game against Kelso, which they lost by a 30-0 score.
State 3A play will take place at the same complex in Lacey next week.
