Decatur baseball finishes fourth

By Tim Clinton

Eastside Catholic's Crusaders crushed Decatur's state Class 3A baseball championship hopes Friday and O'Dea did the same to the Gators' hopes of taking the third place trophy the next day.

Eastside Catholic dealt the Gators a 7-1 defeat in a Friday semifinal and the Irish of O'Dea beat them by a 10-5 score in the Saturday afternoon consolation game.

The end result of the two losses to teams from Seattle's Metro League was a fourth place state finish for a Decatur team that entered last week's regional action as the No. 4-rated state 3A seed.

Both the semifinals and third place game took place at Everett Memorial Stadium, which also goes by the sponsored name of Funko Field and serves as the home of the Everett Aquasox of the long season Class A minors Northwest League.

The Aquasox are a Seattle Mariners affiliate and have been since 1996.

Decatur has now made the state baseball playoffs nine times in its history, including a final four appearance in 1988 with the likes of current Enumclaw head golf coach Steve Murphy and the late Toby Weymiller, both of whom received scholarships to San Diego State with Murphy later switching to the University of Washington.
