Boys soccer

Newport 2, Federal Way 1

No. 16-ranked Federal Way threw a scare into No. 1-ranked Newport before coming up short by a goal in a state Class 4A opening round match Tuesday.

The loss to the Knights from the east side of Lake Washington left the Eagles with a final overall record of 10-8-2.

Newport advances to the state quarterfinals with a record of 17-1-0.  It will be the host team once again.

Stadium 10, TJ 6

Thomas Jefferson fell shy of the visiting Tigers from Tacoma in their final non-league tuneup before the District 3/4 Class 3A tournament that opens Thursday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.

The Raiders drew a 10 a.m. opener against the Gig Harbor Tides.

Bonney Lake 10, Decatur 2

The Gators also played a non-league game Tuesday to tune up for District 3/4 action and lost at Bonney Lake.

Decatur is playing in the Class 4A version of the tournament taking place at the Kent Service Club, starting with a 3 p.m. Friday contest against the Sumner Spartans.
