A Look Ahead

Boys basketball

State Class 3A

Federal Way faces a loser-out game at the state Class 3A regional level Saturday when it pays a 6 p.m. visit to Auburn Mountainview.

The winner plays again at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday in the Tacoma Dome.  That will be another loser-out game.

Pros

Kraken

Seattle hosts Vancouver for 7 p.m. Saturday hockey action at the Climate Pledge Arena before entertaining Minnesota at the same time and place Tuesday.

The Kraken visit Nashville at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Mariners

Seattle goes on the road in its own Peoria, Ariz. stadium to take on San Diego at 5:40 p.m. Friday before hosting the Chicago White Sox there at 12:10 p.m. Saturday.

The Mariners visit the Colorado spring camp at 12:10 p.m. Sunday and entertain Cleveland at the same time Monday in Peoria.

They visit Kansas City at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday and host the Los Angeles Angels at 5:40 p.m. Thursday, when part of the team visits the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Sounders

Seattle travels to Utah to play the Real Salt Lake team at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Seawolves

Seattle's rugby team visits the Houston Sabercats at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Thunderbirds

Seattle drops in on Everett for 7:05 p.m. Friday action at the Angel of the Winds Arena before travelling to Spokane at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.

The Thunderbirde come home to the Showare Center in Kent to face the Tri-City team at 5:05 p.m. Sunday before hosting Kamloops there at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.

Tacoma hosts the San Diego Sockers at 6:05 p.m. Saturday at the Showare Center in Kent.

Husky men

Washington gets a 3 p.m. Saturday visit from Indiana at the Alaska Airlines Arena before visiting USC at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The UW entertains Oregon at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Alaska Airlines Arena.

Washington State plays host to San Diego at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday in Pullman before visiting Pepperdine at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Federal Way 52, Shorewood 33

Federal Way soared past Shorewood in a home state Class 3A play-in game Tuesday.

The Eagles now advance to state regional action, visiting Auburn Mountainview at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Federal Way split with the Lions during the regular season.

At stake Saturday is a trip to the Tacoma Dome for state final 12 action next week.

Girls basketball

Roosevelt 67, Decatur 23

The Gators also faced a state play-in game Tuesday and lost to the host Roughriders to see their season end.

Boys wrestling

State Class 3A

Nehemiah Washington of Decatur captured second place at 215 pounds in action that concluded Saturday at the Tacoma Dome, losing the championship match by fall in 3 minutes, 45 seconds.

Caleb Clemans of Todd Beamer took third place at 113'pounds, winning his final match by a 4-0 score.

Anthony Zanders of Decatur finished fourth at 144 with a 9-7 loss in the match for third place and Ruben Ruiz of Federal Way finished fifth at 120 with a 9-7 victory.

Girls wrestling

State Class 3A

Federal Way finished ninth as a team with 110.0 points and TJ took 20th with 62.5.

Mariana Andrews of the Raiders wound up fourth at 105 pounds, losing the match for third place by fall in 3:41.

Kansada Biangandu of Federal Way finished sixth at 190 with a loss by fall in 2:02 and teammate Natalia Itwanlani placed eighth with a loss by fall in 1:19.

TJ's Girett Perez Espitio took seventh at 170 with a win by fall in 1:54 and Federal Way's Yarely Cervantes grabbed seventh at 110 with a win by fall in 4:15.

Gymnastics

State Class 1A/2A/3A

Thomas Jefferson took seventh place as a team with a total of 152.275 points in this past weekend's action at Sammamish High School.

Todd Beamer placed 11th at 88.825 points, Decatur 21st with 55.25 and Federal Way 39th with 7.300.

Rylee Cabang took eighth in the All-Around for TJ with 35.075 points.

Cabang also tied for third in the balance beam finals the next day with a 9.375 and placed 12th in the bars with an 8.450 just ahead of Todd Beamer's Erin Lu at 8.400.

Myla Felizardo of Todd Beamer tied for fifth in the beam with a 9.350 and took sixth in the floor exercise with a 9.000.

Boys swimming

State Class 3A

Drew Miller of Federal Way finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke finals in the meet that concluded Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center, posting a time of 53.01 seconds.

Decatur's Dean Tucker delivered 11th in the 200 individual medley in 1:58.48 with Miller finishing 14th in 1:59.63.  Tucker was also 15th in the 500 free in 4:56.64.

TJ took 19th in the 200 medley relay with a 1:48.21 and 21st in the 400 free relay in 3:41.33.

Alex Nguyen of the Raiders was 22nd in the 100 back in 59.60.

Eagles, Gators face play-ins

Both the Federal Way boys and Decatur girls basketball teams are facing Tuesday play-in games to open state Class 3A tournament action.

The winners advance to Saturday state regional play to battle for berths at the Tacoma Dome next week.

Federal Way will be playing in its home gymnasium Tuesday, getting a 7 p.m. visit from Shorewood.

Decatur goes on the road to play Roosevelt of Seattle at the same time.

A Look Ahead

High schools

Boys basketball   

Federal Way took a 57-56 loss to Lincoln at Mount Tahoma on Tuesday to finish in a tie for third place in the District 3/4 Class 3A tournament and will advance to the Saturday, March 1 state regionals.

Todd Beamer, meanwhile, bowed out of the District 3/4 tournament with a narrow 60-59 loss to Timberline at home Tuesday.

Girls basketball

Decatur went down to a 62-49 defeat at the hands of the White River Hornets in the Mount Tahoma gymnasium Wednesday to finish in a tie for third place in a District 3/4 Class 3A tournament.

The Gators will not play again in the tournament after the semifinal loss and will advance directly into a Saturday, March 1 state regional game.

Boys swimming and diving

State boys diving action takes place at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way this Thursday.  The 2A competition starts at 8:30 a.m., the 3A at 1 p.m. and the 4A at 5:30 p.m.

The state swimming preliminaries get underway Friday.  The 1A/2A starts off the day at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 3A at 1:30 and the 4A at 6:15 p.m.

Finals for 1A/2A swimming start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by the 3A at 1:15 p.m. and the 4A at 6 p.m.

Wrestling

State Class 3A and 4A boys and girls action begins at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Tacoma Dome with finals starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Friday at 9 a.m. is 1B/2B, 1A and 2A boys and the 2A and 1B/2B/1A girls with those classification groups getting underway again at 9 a.m. Saturday.  Finals begin at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Gymnastics

Sammamish High School is the site of state action this year.

The Class 1A/2A/3A team and individual sessions start at 1 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Thursday with individual finals at 10:45 a.m. Friday.

Class 4A team and individual sessions begin at 1:55 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. Friday with the individual finals starting at 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

Kraken

Seattle returns to action Saturday after a two week break, visiting Florida for a 3 p.m. game.

The Kraken go to Tampa Bay to play at the same time Sunday before stopping by in St. Louis at 5 p.m. Tuesday.VHG0

Seattle entertains Charlotte at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Lumen Field and Antigua GFC comes to town at the same time Wednesday.

Mariners

Seattle opens spring training action Friday, paying a 12:10 p.m. visit to San Diego in Peoria, Arizona.

The Mariners travel to Tempe to play the Los Angeles Angels at the same time Saturday before returning to Peoria to take on Arizona on Sunday.

Seattle visits Milwaukee at the same time Monday and drops in on the Los Angeles Dodgers at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday.

The M's get a 12:10 p.m. Wednesday visit from the currently in Sacramento A's.

Thursday they split up to visit Texas at 12:05 p.m. and host San Francisco at 12:10 p.m.

Seattle pays a 7 p.m. Friday visit to the Wenatchee Wild before hosting Everett for 6:05 p.m. Saturday action at the Showare Center in Kent.

Todd Beamer topped Evergreen of Vancouver in Friday night action to stay alive in the same District 3/4 Class 3A tournament.

The Eagles opened the tournament by posting a win over Silas of Tacoma this past Wednesday.

Thomas Jefferson travelled to the Vancouver area Friday and took a tournament opening loss.

Federal Way posted a 64-50 home win over Silas to open the tournament as Todd Beamer went down to a 70-65 home loss to Gig Harbor.

Girls basketball

Thomas Jefferson travels to Vancouver to play Mountain View in a 6 p.m. Friday opening round game of the District 3/4 Class 3A tournament.

Decatur visits Auburn Mountainview at 7 p.m. Saturday, riding its 44-41 Wednesday opening round victory at Bellarmine.

Playoff pairings changed

Three Federal Way School District girls basketball teams and two boys teams advance into District 3/4 tournament action this week.

The boys teams open with Wednesday games and the girls have openers Wednesday and Thursday.  The girls times were all changed Monday.

All of the teams are in a double elimination situation, with the second round of boys play Friday and the second round of the girls scheduled for Saturday.

The Federal Way High School boys host Silas of Tacoma for 7 p.m. Wednesday action and Todd Beamer entertains Gig Harbor at the same time.

All three local girls teams open on the road.

Decatur visits Bellarmine of Tacoma for a 5:30 p.m. Wednesday game.

Thomas Jefferson travels to Vancouver to play Mountain View at 6 p.m. Thursday as Federal Way drops in on North Thurston in Lacey.

The three girls games had originally been scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.
