Federal Way schools all 3A for 2024-28

By Tim Clinton

It took some doing, but the four Federal Way schools will all be together for the 2024-28 classification cycle.

Decatur, Federal Way, Thomas Jefferson and Todd Beamer will all be competing in the Class 3A division of the North Puget Sound League.

Todd Beamer was actually small enough to be a Class 2A school but opted up to join its local rivals and save on travel.

Thomas Jefferson and Federal Way are large enough to be 4A based on their average actual enrollment, but fell to 3A on their adjusted enrollment for their direct certification percentage.

Federal Way and Decatur are both 4A in the current cycle that ends this spring while TJ and Todd Beamer are 3A.

Auburn Mountainview will join the Federal Way schools in 3A along with Kentlake and Kent-Meridian and newcomers Enumclaw and White River in a nine-team division.

Auburn and Auburn-Riverside move up to 4A this time around to join returning members Mount Rainier, Kennedy Catholic, Tahoma, Kentwood and Kentridge.

Stadium of Tacoma may join the 4A NPSL mix as well.

TJ has an actual average enrollment of 1,308.13, while Federal Way checks in at 1,219.38.  Decatur averages 1,004.00 students and Todd Beamer 992.25 according to numbers released by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

TJ's adjusted enrollment is 1,164.24 and Federal Way's 1,024.28.  Decatur is at 953.80 and Todd Beamer at 823.57.

Class 3A numbers for adjusted enrollment are 900 to 1,200 and 4A 1,201 and up.  Class 2A is 450 to 899.

Schools can opt up or appeal to move down as well.
