A Look Ahead

Pros

Mariners

It's time to go on the road again for the Seattle Mariners as they seek to keep their hold on first place in the American League West.

The Mariners just completed a club record 21-win month of August in their rise to the top, and the 10-game, 11-day trip will go a long ways toward determining whether or not they will stay.

Seattle takes Thursday off to fly to New York, where it will play the Mets at 4:10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10:40 a.m. Sunday.

The Mariners visit the Cincinnati Reds at 1:10 p.m. Monday ahead of 3:40 p.m. action Tuesday and Wednesday. 

Four games in four days in Tampa Bay will follow.

Friday's game will be shown on Apple TV+ with the other two Mets games and the three Cincinnati games coming up this week carried on ROOT Sports Northwest.

Seahawks

Seattle is taking this week off after pairing its roster to 53 and will be preparing to open its season with a 1:20 p.m. home game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Sounders

The Seattle men's soccer team hosts the Portland Timbers for 7:30 p.m. Saturday action at Lumen Field that can be seen on Apple TV+.

Storm

Seattle visits Los Angeles for 7 p.m. Thursday women's basketball before dropping in on Las Vegas at 6 p.m. Saturday and on Atlanta at 4 p.m. next Wednesday.

All three games will be televised on Fox 13+.

OL Reign

The women's soccer squad hosts Orlando for a 3 p.m. Sunday match at Lumen Field before entertaining Louisville at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.

Fox 13+ will show Sunday's action and Wednesday's can be seen on CBS Sports.

Rainiers

Tacoma is at home at Cheney Stadium playing the Sugar Land Space Cowboys at 7:05 p.m. Thursday and Friday, at 6:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:35 p.m. Sunday.

The Rainiers leave for Salt Lake City to battle the Bees at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Aquasox

Everett is in Spokane taking on the Indians at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 6:35 p.m. Sunday.

The Aquasox come home to Funko Field at Everett Memorial to face the Eugene Emeralds at 4:05 p.m. Sunday and 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.  The Mariners' Class A affiliate has Tuesday off.

Emerald Downs

The Auburn oval opens for horse racing action at 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Colleges

Husky football

Washington opens its season Saturday, hosting the Boise State Broncos at 12:30 p.m. on Channel 4.

Cougar football

Washington State University is set to open on the road Saturday, dropping in on Colorado State for a 4 p.m. game that will be aired on CBS Sports.

Husky volleyball

Washington is in Long Beach, Calif. for action this weekend, playing Long Beach State at 7 p.m. Friday and Indiana at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Both matches will be on ESPN+.

High schools

Football

Decatur kicks off its season Thursday, paying a 6 p.m. visit to Kentlake at French Field located next to Kent-Meridian.

The other three local teams are venturing farther for Friday openers at 7 p.m.

Federal Way plays at Eastlake and Todd Beamer at Interlake, while the Thomas Jefferson Raiders will open in Olympia against Capital at Ingersoll Stadium.

Volleyball

Todd Beamer hosts Decatur for a 7:15 p.m. opener Tuesday and Thomas Jefferson entertains Federal Way at the same time.

Boys tennis

Thomas Jefferson plays a 3:30 p.m. Tuesday home match against Decatur as Federal Way opens at Todd Beamer.

Boys golf

Federal Way visits Kentridge Tuesday at the Fairwood Golf and Country Club with a 3:15 p.m. start and Thomas Jefferson travels to Druids Glen to face Tahoma as Todd Beamer journeys to Washington National to play Kentlake.

Girls golf

Decatur hosts Kent-Meridian at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Twin Lakes while Federal Way waits until Wednesday to entertain Kentridge at North Shore.

Federal Way Keeping Track

Wilder conducts hoops school

Former Decatur High School basketball star Quincy Wilder is now sharing his knowledge of basketball -- and life --  with youngsters at his ongoing Q-Time Basketball school in the nearby town of Pacific.

It is taking place at the City Hall gymnasium in the community south of Auburn and can be reached at (206) 657-6344.

Rowe playing for Sounders

Federal Way graduate Kelyn Rowe is still playing midfielder for the Seattle Sounders professional men's soccer team.

Rowe has scored one goal for the Sounders this year and played in 17 matches.

Tuputala returns for Huskies

Federal Way graduate Alphonzo Tuputala is back as a junior linebacker for the University of Washington football team that kicks into action this coming Saturday with a home game against Boise State.

Tuputala checks in at 6-foot, 2-inches tall and weighs 240 pounds.

Brigham now at Syracuse

Thomas Jefferson graduate Jeff Brigham is currently pitching for Syracuse of the New York Mets organization.

Brigham saw most of this year's action with the parent club, however, posting an 0-2 record and a 5.16 earned run average over 29.2 innings with 33 strikeouts.  He was 0-1, 10.00 with six strikeouts in nine innings for Syracuse at last report.

Brigham is a right-handed reliever who started for the Miami Marlins early in his career.  He is 31 years old.

Junk pitching for Nashville

Decatur graduate Janson Junk has spent time with both the Milwaukee Brewers and their minor league team in Nashville this summer.

Junk was 0-1, 7.71 for the Brewers but is now with the Class AAA Sounds with a 6-8 record and 4.37 ERA.  He has 74 strikeouts in 111.1 innings of work over 21 games.

Decatur will be playing in a jamboree at the historic Stadium Bowl in Tacoma Saturday, with the four team action getting underway at noon.

The Gators and the host Stadium Tigers will be joined by West Seattle and Clover Park.

Mariners

Seattle continues its quest to win the American League West this Wednesday, playing the Chicago White Sox in an 11:10 a.m. road game.

The Mariners take Thursday off to come home to T-Mobile Park, where they will play the Kansas City Royals at 7:10 p.m. Friday and 1:10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Oakland A's come to town for action at 6:40 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 1:10 p.m. Wednesday.

ROOT Sports Northwest will televise the games.

Seahawks

Seattle wraps up its preseason Saturday, visiting the Green Bay Packers for a 10 a.m. game that can be seen live on Channel 5.

The Mariners go on to Chicago to take on the White Sox at 5:10 p.m. Monday and Friday and 11:10 a.m. Wednesday.

Football, stadium openers set

No, Federal Way Memorial Field will not be ready to open when the local high school football season kicks off Thursday, Aug. 31 and Friday, Sept. 1.

The construction project will continue deep into the schedule, with the first game there set to feature Federal Way High School at home against Mount Rainier of Des Moines at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12.

In the meantime, Federal Way, Thomas Jefferson, Decatur and Todd Beamer will be playing most of their games on the road, with the only "home" action at Auburn Memorial.

On the road is where all four teams will be for their openers in three weeks.

Decatur will be the first team to plunge into the new season and will also be the closest to home.

The Gators are scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 action against Kentlake at French Field next to Kent-Meridian.

Two of the schools will open the next day on the east side of Lake Washington, with Federal Way dropping in on Eastlake and Todd Beamer on Interlake at 7 p.m.

Thomas Jefferson, meanwhile, will head south at the same time, paying a visit to Capital of Olympia.

TJ hosts Decatur for a crosstown battle at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 only at Auburn Memorial as Federal Way travels all the way to West Valley of Yakima.

Todd Beamer goes to the Vancouver area to face Battle Ground at noon that day.

North Puget Sound League games begin the following week for some, with TJ dropping in on Auburn-Riverside at Auburn Memorial and Decatur on Kentridge at French Field at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14.

Todd Beamer plays at Kent-Meridian with a 4 p.m. start the next day and at 1 p.m. Saturday the Eagles of Federal Way entertain Lake Stevens for a non-league tilt at Auburn Memorial.  Lake Stevens won the state 4A title last year in a tough game against Kennedy Catholic.

French Field hosts a Federal Way doubleheader Friday, Sept. 22 with Todd Beamer visiting Kentlake at 4 p.m. and Federal Way visiting Kentridge at 7:30 p.m.

TJ goes to Auburn Memorial to battle Auburn Mountainview at 7:30 p.m. that day with Decatur traveling to Highline Memorial to face Kennedy Catholic at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.

The TJ Raiders travel to Auburn for 6 p.m. action Thursday, Sept. 28 and Decatur visits Tahoma in Maple Valley at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30 it will be Federal Way visiting Kennedy Catholic and Todd Beamer going to  French Field to face Kentridge.

Todd Beamer is at Auburn Memorial playing Auburn-Riverside at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6 with Decatur going to Highline Memorial to take on Mount Rainier and Federal Way to Tahoma at 7 p.m.

TJ visits the Highline Pirates at noon the next day.

The day after Federal Way is scheduled to play its real home opener Thursday, Oct. 12 at Federal Way Memorial it will be Todd Beamer at Auburn against Auburn Mountainview and TJ at Kent-Meridian at 7 p.m.

Decatur plays Kentwood at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at French Field.

Todd Beamer hosts Auburn at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 at Federal Way Memorial with Federal Way going to French Field to play Kentwood at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20.  Decatur travels to Kent-Meridian at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 and TJ takes the same field to face Kentlake at 3 p.m.

Federal Way Memorial will be the site of two crosstown games the following week.

Decatur visits Federal Way at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 and Todd Beamer is at TJ for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 action.

All four teams will see action the following week, either in a playoff or non-league crossover depending on their regular season finish.

Decatur and Federal Way play at the 4A level in the NPSL while TJ and Todd Beamer are 3A NPSL teams.

It's off to Kansas City for games at 5:10 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Bernier wins three All-City events

Evelyn Bernier of Twin Lakes took first place in three events to highlight the Federal Way performances at Tuesday's Seattle Summer Swim League All-City Meet that took place at the Aqua Club in Seattle.

Bernier's evening started off with her winning the 17th event of the 72-event meet that includes athletes from all over King County.

She took the girls age 9-10 100-yard individual medley in a time of 1 minute, 11.18 seconds.

Bernier followed up by winning the 37th and 47th events as well.

She won the girls 9-10 50 backstroke with a 33.91 effort and the girls 9-10 50 breaststroke in a time of 38.65.

Leonardo DeSimone of Marine Hills was the only other Federal Way athlete to make the top of the awards stand at the meet.

DeSimone splashed to a first place finish in the boys age 8 and under 25 freestyle with a 15.47 clocking.

Action will start at 6:38 p.m. Thursday and Friday to be followed by a 6:07 p.m. contest Saturday and a 1:07 p.m. Sunday game.

The Mariners come home to T-Mobile Park to take on the San Diego Padres at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
