Mentinks help Sumner take second
Former Decatur High School basketball and baseball standout Justin Mentink served as the first base coach for the Sumner Spartans team that took second place in the state Class 4A baseball finals this year.
Mentink had two sons on the squad in Jay and Jaxen.
Sumner was originally the No. 11 seed going into the playoffs but knocked off some highly touted foes, including the rival Puyallup team by a 5-1 score in the state semifinals.
Raider grad serves as WCD treasurer
Thomas Jefferson graduate Stark Porter served as the treasurer this year for the West Central District high school athletic organization.
Porter was best known for his efforts in football in his high school days.
Brigham seeing time with Mets
Thomas Jefferson graduate Jeff Brigham has spent most of the current baseball season with the New York Mets after starting off in the minors.
Brigham has worked 21.1 innings out of the bullpen for New York and struck out 26 while posting an 0-1 record with an earned run average of 3.80.
Junk with Nashville Sounds
Decatur graduate Janson Junk is currently with the Nashville Sounds, the Class AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Junk has a 2-4 record with a 4.27 ERA for the Sounds and was 0-1, 7.71 in a brief stint with Milwaukee this year.
Jaden McDaniels in Minnesota
Federal Way graduate Jaden McDaniels played this past season in the National Basketball Association for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who drafted him after one year with the University of Washington team.
McDaniels averaged 12.1 points in 79 games played this year to go with averages of 3.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists.
Jalen McDaniels with Hornets
Federal Way graduate Jalen McDaniels played 80 games for the NBA's Charlotte Hornets this past season, averaging 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists.
